Multithreaded TCG works fine, so yes '-smp 12' does give me better
performance for multi-threaded/multi-programmed workload in the VM
(e.g., compiling).

I haven't tried either of those OS, but there's a Fedora port to
RISC-V that is rock-solid for me on Qemu 4.1. The only limitation is I
haven't be able to convince the firmware/bootloader to initialize more
than 8 cores.
I'll probably switch to Debian at some point, but it's a work VM so I
need something reasonably reliable.
