Booting kernel on IBM RS/6000 7043 model140
Hi folks,
I'm trying to boot the Debian Lenny (5.0.5) powerpc build CD-ROM on an
old (PReP-based) IBM 7043 model 140 machine.
Up to this point all of my attempts remained fruitless.
According to the Debian documentation (
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/powerpc/ch02s01.html.en )
PReP-based machines are supported.
Whenever I tried to boot, as instructed by the Debian Handbook (
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/powerpc/ch05s01.html.en#boot-cd
), I got the ok firmware prompt back, and nothing happened.
Can the Debian PowerPC netinst image be booted on a PReP machine? Does
yaboot work at all with such hardware?
If not, then why are PReP machines listed as "supported"?
If current Lenny CDs are not bootable, then what about older releases?
Should I try booting those?
If I can't use yaboot, then what other boot loader is available to
boot the CD, and what firmware command should I use to boot it?
I also tried to use the whole device paths, to get the system to boot,
as I have two CD-ROMs in the machine, and "boot cdrom..." doesn't
exactly tell the machine which drive to use...
I have read through the list archive, but there was nothing about
booting CD-ROMs on such hardware.

Is booting floppy disks really the only way to get Linux to boot on
this machine?

Make the switch to open (source) applications, protocols, formats now:
- windows -> Linux, iexplore -> Firefox, msoffice -> OpenOffice.org
- msn -> jabber protocol (Pidgin, Google Talk)
- mp3 -> ogg, wmv -> ogg, jpg -> png, doc/xls/ppt -> odt/ods/odp
