I appreciate your response.
Note that my problem is much earlier than X. I cannot switch to the console, 
because booting stops before my discs are mounted. During bootup I need to 
give a password on the console so the kernel and decrypt my hard drive 
partitions. Usually my 2.6.26 kernel says:

but I think the bpo.1 and bpo.2 kernels only listed the uid device number
