Have you considered running the apps on a more powerful server? 
using xdmcp or probably freenx?
... as a thin client (probably diskless with netboot)

Hi, the problem is that theses computer (8 in total, same processor, 
disk capacity, etc, etc) are quite forgotten and the faculty directors 
won't put a cent on it...

Once they were good machines, but know any Pentium-whatever is doing a 
better job :(
