initrd: upgrade kernel from 2.4 to 2.6

hi

I've installed Debian GNU/Linux on my Powermac 8200,
and currently woody w/2.4 kernels works quite well.

When I try to upgrade to 2.6 kernel, the system does
not boot and I have to use the boot/root floppy disks
to bootstrap the system.

So after adding sarge or etch to sources.list:

    $ apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8-powerpc

or

    $ apt-get install linux-image-2.6.15-1-powerpc

is ok, installation goes well. quik.conf is updated:

    init-message="Debian GNU/Linux PowerPC (woody)"
    default=Linux
    timeout=100
    root=/dev/sda3
    partition=3

    ## Do not point image= to a symlink, quik can't follow symlinks
    image=/boot/vmlinux-2.6.15-1-powerpc
        label=Linux
        read-only
        initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.6.15-1-powerpc

running

    $ quik
    $ quikconfig

System is rebooted, in the top left corner is a penguin in
strange colours, no text, and nothing more happens (no reboot).

So my main question is; does 2.6 kernels w/initrd actually work
with quik? I have got both 2.4.18 and 2.4.27 working with quik,
and they do NOT have initrd. Both 2.6.x kernel I've tried have
initrd and they do NOT work. What is the _exact_ syntax for
getting a succesful quik.conf booting 2.6 ? Does running "quik"
or "quikconfig" actually make a difference ?

from my "nvsetenv":

  boot-device     /bandit/gc/53c94/sd@0:0
  boot-file
  boot-command begin ['] boot catch 1000 ms cr again

NOTE: I could not get the microphone working with 2.4 and OSS,
      so that is my main motivation for 2.6

Also here are some notes which I've written:

thanks!
