look at 'dmesg' (ie. type 'dmesg' on the console) and
see if the kernel tells you why its being killed

very odd, could be a hardware error? is your machine
unstable? is it unstable under load?

My system is running over NFS. Here is the dpkg version info:

PQ2FADS-ZU:/var/cache/apt/archives# dpkg --version
Debian GNU/Linux `dpkg' package management program version 1.10.25
(powerpc).
This is free software; see the GNU General Public Licence version 2 or
later for copying conditions. There is NO warranty.
See dpkg --licence for copyright and license details.
PQ2FADS-ZU:/var/cache/apt/archives#

PQ2FADS-ZU:/var/cache/apt/archives# dpkg -i ftp_0.17-12_powerpc.deb
Killed
PQ2FADS-ZU:/var/cache/apt/archives# dpkg -i telnet_0.17-29_powerpc.deb
Killed
PQ2FADS-ZU:/var/cache/apt/archives#

As seen above, running dpkg manually get itself killed....
