Hi list! After answering questions on how to use BootX to boot into the second part of the debian-installer (and problems with quik on Beige G3) I found errors in the installation manual. Below is suggestions for modifications, which I will send to the administrator of the manual if you do not speak out now. (The xml tags removed for improved readability in this email) ---------- start snippet from nobootloader.xml --------------- Continue Without Boot Loader This option can be used to complete the installation even when no boot loader is to be installed, either because the arch/subarch doesn't provide one, or because none is desired (e.g. you will use existing boot loader). [...] This option is useful for some Oldworld Powerpc with buggy firmware which make it difficult or impossible to boot with quik (known problematic models include the beige G3 and Performa 6360). If you plan to manually configure your bootloader, you should check the name of the installed kernel in /target/boot. You should also check that directory for the presence of an initrd; if one is present, you will probably have to instruct your bootloader to use it. Other information you will need are the disk and partition you selected for your / filesystem and, if you chose to install /boot on a separate partition, also your /boot filesystem. If the existing bootloader rely on the original operation system to read the files it boots (the kernel and the initrd), which is the normal case on m68k systems and oldworld powerpc, then you also have to manually mount the partition that the bootloader can read files from and copy the kernel and initrd from /boot to that partition. This is necessary whenever the original operating system cannot read files on partitions formatted with the filesystem you installed &debian; on. -------------------- end snippet from nobootloader.xml ------------------- -------------------- start snippet from boot-drive-files.xml ------------ Hard Disk Installer Booting for OldWorld Macs The boot-floppy-hfs floppy uses miBoot to launch Linux installation, but miBoot cannot easily be used for hard disk booting. BootX, launched from MacOS, supports booting from files placed on the hard disk. BootX can also be used to dual-boot MacOS and Linux after your Debian installation is complete. For the Performa 6360 and the Beige G3, it appears that quik cannot make the hard disk bootable. So BootX is required on thoose models. -------------------- end snippet from boot-drive-files.xml ------------ ------------------- start snippet from boot-new.xml ------------------- If you use BootX to boot into the installed system, you should have copied the kernel and initrd from /boot to the MacOS partition before finishing the installer as described in <xref linkend="nobootloader"/>. Within BootX select your new kernel and new initrd. ------------------- end snippet from boot-new.xml ------------------- If there are errors in the text above, speak out now kind regards, -- Hans Ekbrand (http://sociologi.cjb.net) <hans@sociologi.cjb.net> GnuPG key: 1024D/7050614E Fingerprint: 1408 C8D5 1E7D 4C9C C27E 014F 7C2C 872A 7050 614E Learn about secure email at http://www.gnupg.org
