vanilla is a flavor without taste ;-).
So a vanilla installation means an installation without any special
configuration or personalization, i.e. I installed my system with all
recommended options, without hacking anything.
Though, vanilla is applicable to any software, i.e. a vanilla kernel is
a kernel without patches and so on...

If you are talking about other distributions (Fedora, Mandrake, Suse,
Slackware), I agree.
Debian instead is ported on 11 different architectures, and each package
is available for almost every architecture...
