Solved Re: Swithed disk into another system, now yaboot refuses to boot

Okay, the different OF-path was handled with the debian-boot-cd and the freeze with the xserver was solved by removing the scond graphiccard from the system (Villagetronic MPDD). I do not know why the system freeze when there is another graphiccard?

Okay now I am back with linux running.
Bye,
Christoph

Just to let everybody know that got trapped with the same problem and how to solve this problem: Read: http://www.penguinppc.org/bootloaders/yaboot/doc/yaboot-howto.shtml
Especially chapter 9.

I solved the booting problem with jumping into OF and typing
boot ultra1:2,\\:yaboot and after yaboot loads I typed "ultra1:3,/boot/vmlinuxtest root=/dev/hdb3 ro" and voila Linux boots :-) but crashes when I wants to load the xserver. Looks like the different G4s use different pci-addresses for the graphiccard :-(

Now I will do the following:
Install Ext2FS-support for MacOS X, mount the linux-root-partition, remove the links that start the xserver from /etc/rc2.d and restart. Than I am going to fix the boot-problem with ybin and look for the right pci-address. BTW. Is there any way to get a more "failsafe" fallback when the xserver can not find the configured graphiccard? At the moment the mac restarts automatically after around two minutes. (I do not know why the watchdog jumps in, or maybe this something that linux does?)

Bye,
Christoph

P.S. Okay, because the root-fs was dirty after the crash Ext2FS for MacOS X refuses to mount the partition. So I booted from the debian cd, mounted the root-filesystem, removed S99gdm from /etc/rc2.d and reboot into OF, load yaboot, boot into linux, changed OF-path in yaboot.conf run ybin and rebooted. Linux boots up fine :-)
But as soon as I start the xserver the mac complety freezes :-(

Hello List!

I was running a G4/400 (first generation with 10/100Mbit/s Ethernet and 16MB ATI Rage Pro) with two disks, one for MOSX one for linux.

Now I got a G4/466 (second genaration with 10/100/1000MBit/s Ethernet and 16MB ATI Rage Pro) and I put the disk that linux resides on form the old 400 to this new 466. I did not change any jumpers or anything. This disk was jumpered as a slave. Now I jumped into OpenFirmware and set the boot device to "ultra1:2,\\:tbxi" and typed boot. The first stage boot-loader with selections for Linux, MacOSX or CDROM came up but after the timeout when the second bootstage should load I get this message: "Loading second stage bootstrape... can´t OPEN: /pci@f2000000/pci-bridge@d/mac-io@7/ata-4@1f000/disk@1:2,\\yaboot"
and the system jumps back into open firmware. :-)

AFAIK this looks like the different G4s use a different OpenFirmware-path for the second drive. So here is the question: How can I boot into my Linux to run ybin again?

I tried with the debian 3.0 boot-cd but I was not able to write a new boot-config.

Thanks in advanced, bye
Christoph
