running DVD's on an imac dv

ok im trying to run dvds on my imac dv.
its a 450, with 384 mb ram. running debian (unstested)

in macos9.2.2 dvds ran beautifully. but in linux
with mplayer they are watchable but not what i was
hoping for.

having said that mplayer plays mpeg4 (ok dvix)
much better than macos9 ever did.

ok so heres some other config details that might
help.

im running 2.4.25 (from debs)
alsa 1.0.4
x 4.3 (from debs) -> running fine. as i said, other video runs perfectly

any ideas. maxing the cache out makes things run a little better.

having the dvdrom on hdb (which i presume is the slave of the
hdd) might be causing problems.

trying to change the dvdrom to 32bit io (with hdparm) is rather fatal.
just locks it up. although changing the hdd to 32bit works fine.
dont know if anyone has looked at that. once i change to 32bit
i see virtually no difference.

anyway if anyone has any ideas. i would appreciate it.

or if anyone could recommend other dvd players to try,
but seeing they all just seem to use one of two libraries....
