Inexistent modem device in 2.4.21-powerpc FireWire iBook?

This is a FireWire iBook SE running a mix of stable and unstable, with
the standard kernel-image-2.4.21-powerpc from unstable.

Running pppconfig, it was unable to find the modem device.

Funny thing is that dmesg says it should be OK, even after some strange
error messages:

IN from bad port 279 at e5b32430
IN from bad port 279 at e5b3247c
IN from bad port 27a at e5b3449c
IN from bad port 278 at e5b32528
lp: driver loaded but no devices found
macserial: i2c-modem detected, id: 1
PowerMac Z8530 serial driver version 2.0
tty00 at 0xe5b3c020 (irq = 22) is a Z8530 ESCC (internal modem)
tty01 at 0xe5b43000 (irq = 50) is a Z8530 ESCC

	But inspecting /dev directly gave:

  crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 5, 0 2003-07-15 05:55 tty
  crw------- 1 root root 4, 0 2003-05-06 16:11 tty0
  crw------- 1 root tty 4, 1 2003-07-15 06:01 tty1

That is, no tty00 I could find...

	TIA!
