I noticed. What's the reason for this, and more importantly, what's the
reason for gcc 2.95 compiled kernels and gcc 3.3 compiled modules to not
cooperate cleanly?

I had not noticed such a tranition was ever officially announced _for
building kernel images_ (look at Documentation/Changes). So yes, this
situation definitely warrants a debconf message.
