It seems that Rhythmbox is potentially a nice alternative for XMMS.
See <http://www.rhythmbox.org>. Unfortunately, it isn't that active
nowadays, but I hope that development gets a kick soon.

I would love to learn about other MP3s players that had MP3 and tag
management built in. This is one point where iTunes is better than the
alternatives we have available in Linux.
