Does Control-Option-1 take you to console 1, or Control-Option-Backspace 
terminate the X Session?

The latest woody (4.0.13?) has a nice curses interface offering to show 
you the error log when it fails. But the error log is still where it 
usually is, /var/log/XFree86.0.log. Does it help?
