Are you running X? (Is esd running? If it is then you got problems
(Which can be fixed by using LD_PRELOAD or some such thing pointing at
an esd dsp compat lib))

Other than that..  You are in group audio, and /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer
are rw to group audio?
