Bug in auctex, file a bugreport if nobody has done that yet.

Known bug I think.

Whee, you still hit a corrupted binary. I've heard a rumour things
work better if you compile dpkg with -O0 on powerpc.

If you upgrade to X 4.1 you have to tweak fonts a bit iirc. At any rate
that is not a dpkg problem.
