The brief blinking is due to cable capacitance being detected as a link
beat. That's usual behaviour when you plug a 10BaseT cable into a hub or
device port.

Are you sure it's fried? Ethernet cables are isolated by transformer
from the device electronics; those things are quite tough, actually. I'd
be amazed if it were really fried. Also keep in mind it could be the
other side that's fried....
