Sorry about that!  It was all in my other post:
8500 powermac (controlfb), kernel 2.4, 8bpp, kernel parameter:
video=controlfb:vmode:14,cmode:0.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.  Maybe you have too much free time
on your hands now 4.1.0 is out!
