You're correct of course, but I'd wager it's unlikely to happen.  Is this
better? :
if ["`lsmod ... `"]; then
	tempfile -n /var/run/airport || {
		$logger -p daemon.error -t pwrctl "$0: cannot create tempfile"
		exit 1
	}
	AIRPORT=`..`
	...
fi
