power3 debian install

I've downloaded the debian .../disks-powerpc/current directory and added a
stanza to /etc/yaboot.conf (this is from a SuSE install that boots fine):
image = /root/debian/current/chrp/linux
    label = deb-inst
    initrd = /root/debian/current/chrp/images-1.44/root.bin
    initrd-size = 16384
    read-only

On booting this image, I get the following:
Please wait, loading kernel...
    Elf32 kernel loaded...
Loading ramdisk...
ramdisk loaded at 0x01600000, size 1474560 bytes.

and then the box locks up. it won't respond to ctrl-alt-del (it normally does).
I have to hit the power button.

I've also tried with an initrd-size of 8192.

Again, please don't send replies to this address.
