Presumably, since you are posting to debian-powerpc, you are using a
powerpc based machine.  Sun's JDK for Linux is x86 only (does linux run on
other platforms?  I wasn't aware).

You need to make use of the Blackdown JDK port, which has been built, and
runs quite well on PPC, although sadly with no JIT for the Java2 versions
of the SDK.  It can be found at http://penguinppc.org/usr/java/
