X on G4 with ATI Rage 128 Pro and LCD Panel

Hello,

I have potato 2.2r2 with kernel 2.2.18pre21 on a 500MHz G4 with an ATI
Rage 128 Pro AGP 4x and it works fine on the console. I boot with
video=ofonly. X doesn't work though, and from following this list that
might be expected. X (as XF68FBDev) does get started by xdm, the screen
turns white 3 times and then X gives up. Is the ATI Rage 128 Pro just not
supported? If there is hope within potato and XF3 I will provide the logs
for debugging.

Will I have to go to XF4? I am not really willing to go all the way to
unstable, so I reckon I have either find XF4 .debs for potato (I tried to
search, but no luck) or to get the sources and compile. If so, is there a
recipie somewhere which guides me through getting and compiling the
deb-sources?

While I am at it, I have another little problem. This mac has an ATAPI
DVD-RAM, which I only get to use in read-only mode. At boot it is
recognised as

MATSUHITA PD-2 LF-D110, ATAPI CDROM

and sits at /dev/hdc. A bit later I get the message

ATAPI DVD-ROM DVD-R drive, 2048 kB cache

I can use it to read CD-ROMs and DVD-RAMs. However, the DVD-RAMs are
always mounted read-only, even though my fstab allows for rw
mounting. Also, mke2fs will not format a DVD-RAM disk, claiming it is a
read-only medium and I am absolutely sure that the disk is NOT
write-protected. Any hints?

Oh, and then there is the mouse-button 2 and 3 emulation. I got the USB
mouse to work with gpm (made the device nodes etc.), but I can't get the
3-button emulation to work. Turning it on in /proc/sys/dev/mac_hid has no
effect. A Logitech USB wheelmouse worked just great though.

Cheers, Stefan
