After some experimenting, I have discovered the trick to getting my usb mouse to work under X w/o backporting stuff from 2.4. I've posted this to possibly help some other people just installing Debian. The trick is to set the protocol to "IMPS/2" and the device to /dev/usbmouse. I hope this may be of help to someone!
