Yes, I had the same experience on i386 with diskless-0.3.7
package. But I believe it is fixed now. You need to have
these lines for debian:
# /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

# The loopback interface
iface lo inet loopback
