sorry, I don't know anything about USB and pismos,
but
irda goes well on older PB,
check the irda-HOWTO and after some mknod playing:
12:13@pts/2 ~ > ll /dev/ir*
   0 crw------- 1 wurz tty 161, 0 Jul 24 18:35 /dev/ircomm0
   0 crw-rw-r-- 1 root tty 161, 1 May 8 00:49 /dev/ircomm1
   0 crw-rw-r-- 1 root tty 161, 16 May 8 00:50 /dev/irlpt0
   0 crw-rw-r-- 1 root tty 161, 17 May 8 00:50 /dev/irlpt1

plus installing of irda-utils and pilot-link

these two commands do it:
# irattach /dev/ttyS1
# irmanager -d 1

pilot-link's apps or
gnome-pilot or
jpilot
have to be told about /dev/ircomm0

that's all :)

Yours, ce
