debian-powerpc: vncserver not working !!!

I have a PowerMacG4 and a new PowerBook at work.  I am using the G4 as a server and I want to use VNC so that my colleagues can access the G4 from their MSW boxes via the vncviewer.exe client.

I have installed vncserver and xvncviewer on the G4, PowerBook and an Intel laptop, all running debian linux.  I have also installed vncviewer.exe on an MSW box.

I can get it to run perfectly with the vncserver on the intel machine and connect to it from any of the powerpc machines using xvncviewer, but it does not work if the vncserver is running on a debian-powerpc machine and try to connect to it from any other machine (intel or powerpc).  I get lots of colour problems and can barely make out the text in menus.  The mouse also leaves trails of garbage all over the screen.

I conclude that the vncserver port for debian-powerpc has some bugs, as the xvncviewer works fine when connecting to intel machines running the vncserver.

Is there something I can do to get this to work ?
Any ideas or suggestions ?
I'm running XFree86 version 4.0.1 which I compiled from the sources and installed into /opt/X11R6.  I don't think this should be a problem.

Thanks,
Brendan Simon.
