serious pam problem...

Hey, I'm having a serious pam problem:
bash-2.02$ passwd
Changing password for huberj
(current) UNIX password: 
You must wait longer to change your password
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error

bash-2.02$ su      
Password: 
You are required to change your password immediately (root enforced)
su: Authentication token is no longer valid; new one required.
Sorry.

Same message if I try and log in from a VC...

I don't have any root shells open, alas, so am I screwed?
(boot single user anyway)
