Checking ftp.debian.org, the newest binary deb available is 2.3-5,
which I had installed. The newest version in the source tree is
2.5-2.

After installing that (much harder than it might have been, since
debian/remove-tmp is not set executable by default), it seems to work
exactly as well as 2.3-5 did: It plays CDs fine, the configuration
program ran without problems, it can download CDDB information
(through my Web proxy server), and the volume controls work fine, as
does the Web feature. Try clicking on *any* radio button widget,
though, and you get a spectacular display of strobing as the values
cycle back and forth. After a few seconds, the program segfaults.
It's not clear to me whether the problem is with xmcd or lesstif.

I've also used (and will be going back to) gtcd, which works fine
(volume and all). And with gmix, I was able to turn off the external
speaker and still get sound through the headphone jack on my CD-ROM
drive (especially cool because I didn't even think that jack was
connected to anything!).

Hope this helps.

   C.
