what graphic board do you have, what kernel are you using ? what version of the C library ?

best would be to grab the X source and compile it for yourself (you can get my xfree tarball for debian form
incoming and build the X package from them.)

try upgrading libc to the latest from ftp.debian.org ...

couldn't do anything with your strace output, don't read bin-hex stuff, it's not because i run linuxppc that i have a
mac ...
