Your descriptions are a bit scanty :)
2.1.127 gives the same error ?
message about serial ports is the latest in your boot process ?
Did you change /etc/rc.boot/0setserial ?
Did you add cua devices to /dev ?
These were missing in my installation :

0 crw-rw-r-- 1 root root 10, 154 Nov 16 01:05 pmu #it's a powerbook
