$ soffice -no-oosplash

It isn't anymore in 4.0, yes. (because the need for it is fixed in
oosplash itself), but in 3.5 (what you report it against) and 3.6 it
*is* there and needed. Have a mixup of stuff and/or a non-Debian "soffice"?
