And all of 3.4 and 3.5 use the same hunspell lib, use the same paths
of dicts, and there's no dict behaviour change in 3.5 afaik.[1] (And it
probably would have been noticed far earlier.)

And as we see below, you haven't installed either one....
What happens if you install a matching dictionary for your language
(and set the document language to that?)
Given your locxale is en_US the default text document langauge
then "of course" is en_US...

[1] There has been a switch libtextcat -> libexttextcat so that might have
broken the *automatic language detection*, but not the *spellchecking* itself
