Bug#566832: reinstalling solved this problem
I can see the same behaviour on my Sid/Experimental mix: when I run oowriter or oocalc, splash screen shows briefly (just a flicker) and then ... nothing.
Output on console:
...
$ oowriter
javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
Please ensure that a JVM and the package openoffice.org-java-common is installed.
If it is already installed then try removing ~/.openoffice.org/3/user/config/javasettings_Linux_*.xml
...
(JRE warning possibly unrelated, as I've never installed Java components)
Dmesg:
...

...
After I did
#apt-get install --reinstall openoffice.org
#apt-get install --reinstall openoffice.org-core
as suggested by MP, problem is gone! (díky, Martine)
