Full text search via help menu -> help window -> third tab above on the left side reveals no results. Pops up message window: no content found (?) (German: Keine Themen gefunden)
Downgrading to testing brings back lost functionality.

Actually, no, it does. Just tried it in a i386 sid chroot.
Closing. (See below for reasoning)

That sounds like you don't have liblucene2-java installed.

The full text search wants to access the index which it needs liblucene2-java
for. That's why the openoffice.org metapackage depends on it and the
help-* packages recommend it (you don't NEED to have it when you don't want
to do full text search in the help, and saves Java dependencies on people
who don't need them).

I bet that this downgrade (did you do apt-get install openoffice.org there)
somewhow pulled in liblucene2-java.

This shows that you might not have installed the openoffice.org meta
package at all and so you don't have liblucene2-java installed (unless
apt/aptitude installed it because it's a Recommends or you installed it
yourself).
