Bug#488875: openoffice.org-writer: email mail-merge doesn't connect to smtp server

Under settings for Writer there is a choice "Mail Merge E-Mail".
In which an SMTP server and authentication details are entered.
When choosing the button "Test Settings" it makes no attempt to contact the server but immediately reports a fail in
both tests.
The e-mail mail merge wizard therefore fails.
There is a report upstream http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=90045
in which cornouws@openoffice.org reports that the bug can not be reproduced in a standard Sun build.
