Works here. The message you get comes when there are resource files etc.
missing. Which packages of OOo do you have installed?
You you have *en-US*.res in /usr/lib/openoffice/program/resource?
Also it can be that simply (because of fs errors etc) your fs (and
therefore OOos files) became corrupted...
