to reproduce (note the extra 'ls'):
flo@tigerbay:~$ oowriter ls somedocument.odt
writer starts up, and eventually displays an error message "/home/flo/ls
does not exist". Only this message is hidden behind the splash screen,
so it looks as if the startup is suddenly stalled. There's an extra
window in the window list (titled "OpenOffice.org 2.2"), but clicking on
it several times doesn't seem to have any noticeable effect (the error
message is minimized and restored, but again placed behind the splash
screen so its window can't be moved around in view either): OOo seems
dead, when it's really just waiting for user input, because it's
perfectly hiding the message window.
proposed solution: make splash screen less obtrusive, so that windows
can be placed in front of it (I think this used to be the case some time
ago)
I am using xfce4
sorry I couldn't test this with different versions of OOo and different
window managers / desktop environments as this laptop is very old and
rather slow / lacking memory
