Bug#440974: openoffice.org-writer: OO.O-writer document causes 2.3 version to hang on loading

Loading a document from the main menu causes a hang as described -- X11 doesn't update (the clock stops) for a couple of minutes, then moves on.
However, the cause is not incompatibility with with a 2.0 document format. I can open files with no delay by using keyboard shortcuts -- eg Ctrl-o
to open, Ctrl-s to save, and so forth.
Any interaction with the main menu will cause the application and all of X11 to hang for a minute or two.
The behavior doesn't happen immediately after a reboot, but gets progressively worse the longer the machine has been running. After a while, it
hangs X11 permanently and only a reboot will fix it.
I'm adding to this bug report because the symptoms are identical in the early stages. #438882 may be the same bug -- but again, it's not restricted
to opening odt files, or even just opening files period. Any use of the Main Menu will trigger the behavior, and the same function using keyboard
shortcuts does not cause problems.
The bug is debilitating and the severity should be upgraded.
