Hmm. Did you try on your user with a clean profile?
And, more importantly, as bpo is out the scope of this BTS: Does it also
fail with sids version? (Of course you need to downgrade libcairo2 to
1.4.6, but...)

Uh, if your APT prefers testing, Why do you use the backport? Use sids
version.
