without this patch the font hinting does not work in OO with the newest
version of libfreetype6 (I have 2.2.1-2 installed).

To reproduce disable font aliasing in OO, and enable font hinting in
whatever way you usually do it (in the GNOME font control panel,
for example). Then start OO and notice the ugly fonts.
