Downloading as I write. We'll see what that does.

Prior to installing gcj-* stuff, it was like this:

$ COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l '*java*' | grep ii | cut -c-75
ii  java-common                                  0.23
ii  java-package                                 0.27
ii  libgnujaxp-java                              1.3-4
ii  libhsqldb-java                               1.8.0.2-2
ii  libjaxp1.2-java                              1.2.01-1
ii  libjline-java                                0.9.1-2
ii  libpg-java                                   8.1-404-1
ii  libpgjava                                    8.1-404-1
ii  libsablevm-classlib1-java                    1.11.3-2
ii  libservlet2.3-java                           4.0-8
ii  libxalan2-java                               2.6.0-6
ii  libxerces2-java                              2.6.2-3
ii  libxt-java                                   0.20050823-1
ii  openoffice.org-java-common                   2.0.0-5
$ COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l '*j2*' | grep ii | cut -c-75
ii  sun-j2re1.5                                  1.5.0+update06
$ COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l '*kaffe*' | grep ii | cut -c-75
ii  kaffe                                        1.1.6-3
ii  kaffe-common                                 1.1.6-3
ii  kaffe-doc                                    1.1.6-3
ii  kaffe-pthreads                               1.1.6-3

Once I had installed the gcj-* stuff it seems to work (almost) fine -
unrelated bug report on its way.... So feel free to close this bug
report!

Thanks for the speedy response!

   Julian
