Yes, they do depend on a GNOME 2.2 backport, James Strandboge's one.

You should probably just use DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS parameters instead of
modifying debian/rules.

At least Chris and I try from time to time to build it on Woody and fix
a number of problems each time.
I don't care personally about a pure-Woody/non-GNOME2.2-backport
version, though.
Keep us informed anyway.
