Thanks for that reference.  Throwing out Alan's own paper, the Russian 
paper, and hoping that peer-review means something, I think these two 
citations will tell me if I have a shot at implementing these things.

Seem like the best starting points.  I will be in my office on Thursday 
and will stop by the university library and get copies of these and read 
them and see if just how hard these algorithms are to code up properly.

I'll let you know what I find.
