It is interesting that mldonkey supports this. However, I have to imagine that it is probably not a common use case, right? Are you an upstream developer? Have you considered integrating the Debian-specific utilities upstream? Anyway (and I'm not sure if this was the case when I first submitted my report), it looks like the mldonkey-server package at least asks whether or not it should start mldonkey from the init script.
