It's just an usual chroot generated debootstrap.

I don't really know approx, so I don't have any guess here. It's seems
quite reasonable to return an error code in this situation but OTOH my
feeling is that the postinst of a package should not fail depending on
the current state of the computer it's being installed on... You could
maybe ignore the return value of the init.d script in the postinst?
