I don't remember the discussion, but can't you keep it as a native debian package, yet using a dash in the version? I use this scheme with some packages. When I make changes only to the packaging stuff I bump the number after the dash, when I make other changes I bump the part before it (of course setting to 1 what follows). Lintian gives a warning, but it is considered to be bogus.
