I assume you're bootstrapping it via serial console. Is there any
chance the kernel's console is defaulting to the framebuffer
instead? Usually you'd need to override that behavior with a kernel
command line option (console=ttyS0,9600n8 or similar).

It /shouldn't/ since as I understand it there's no framebuffer in that model (there's certainly no video connector on the back). So far I've not had any success with kernel options... I could experiment with building a new kernel (I've got mips running slowly on Qemu) but am a newbie as far as this architecture's concerned.
