Well, packages that are not actively maintained upstream usually
accumulate a lot of Debian modifications as time goes by.  Do not
assume that the app will always work as it is...  this applies to
trivial ones, too.

Sure, no problem.  Just apply as a project member and I will approve
you.  Then you can use git-import-dsc/gbp-create-remote-repo to create
and push the repository at Alioth.  If you prefer to use another VCS,
feel free to.
