Using PostScript fonts

I am packaging TikiWiki. It includes pdf-php, a PDF generator written in
This contains font metric files (afm) for Adobe's standard fonts
(Courier, Times, Helvetica etc). These are, to my knowledge, not freely
distributable (?), so I have to strip those.
(The actual code in pdf-php is public domain.)
I plan to use the fonts from the gsfonts package instead, which should
be almost equivalent, right? In addition, since pdf-php supports any
Type1 and TrueType fonts, it would be nice to let the user utilize all
such fonts installed on the system, not just the standard fonts.
Now I would like to know if there is a mechanism that can locate font
files (both afm and pfb) based on a name like "Courier" or "Helvetica"?
It would help if the mechanism were easily available from a PHP script.
