Oh! You are right, this works. But unfortunatly this behavior is not
explained clearly in my manpage :-( Only a flag "notrunc" is mentioned:

notrunc
        do not truncate the output file

I wasn't aware that this implies that there must be a case in which the
file is truncated. Thanks for the hint!
